Came across this interesting display of an early gasoline pump from the first service station in Winterset, Iowa. The pump was manufactured by the S.F. Bowser and Company of Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
The station was owned and operated by a Mr. J. O Bare, who originally had a barrel with a crank and a hose out on the curb. The City Council thought it was too dangerous and forced him to put in a pump. It is rumored that there was only one car in Winterset at the time, possibly a Cadillac.
Mr. Bare said in 1940 that he couldn't remember the exact date the station was installed, but it was shortly after 1905. He was still selling gas from it in the "Winterset Madisonian" article of Aug. 14, 1940. The article stated that the sign above the pump said "Automobile Filling Station".
It is said to be the first service station between Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. Bare owned a grocery store in the building where the pump was housed.
