In May of 1777, he enlisted for nineteen months in VA under the joint command of Captain Boyd and Captain Robert Madison. The regiment’s commander was Colonel Benjamin Kilgore.

Williams was one of the earliest settlers in Liberty township, Delaware County. Elections were first held in his cabin in 1824. His cabin was also the site of the first Post Office in the county.
