The Blanchard House - Museum of African-American History and Culture in Charlotte County - was originally the home of Joseph and Minnie Blanchard. It was constructed at 523 Fitzhigh Avenue. It was relocated to its current location along Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. on "Emancipation Day" May 20, 2002.
The Museum was dedicated on May 22, 2004. On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley damaged the building. The post Hurricane Charley restoration went underway immediately and the rededication on February 4, 2006.
The Punta Gorda Garden Club cooperated with Punta Gorda's Home Depot to design and create the oasis landscaping stretching along the southern edge of the Blanchard House property. With a telescopic flag pole at the entrance, the dedication brick path leads visitors to a bust of Lt. Charles P. Bailey, an honoured U.S. military veteran who was one of the Tuskagee Airmen.
There are numerous prominent names along the path, from Lt. Charles Bailey to Joe Blanchard, who built the Blanchard House in 1925, and even U.S. Cleveland and Lindsey Williams - notable historians - have bricks along the path for their service to their country.
