The original lighthouse on this site was built in 1851 and was deemed unsuitable and in 1858, it was destroyed. In 1999, the foundation of the original building and tower were discovered. The two story house has a red gabled roof with the tower extending from the top. The lantern room is 9 sided with wrought iron framing. The present building was lit in 1858 using a fourth order Fresnel lens. The tower is 41 feet tall with a 47 foot focal plane.
The keepers house has been beautifully preserved and is full of early photos, furniture, toys and kitchenware.
The museum and gift shop are open from May to October.
