When Furnas County was organized in 1873, there were already two established towns, Arapahoe and Beaver City and in county's first organization election on April 8, 1873, ballots were cast at both sites.

A heavy snowstorm delayed the transport of ballots to the Secretary of State's office in Lincoln and Beaver City's ballots did not arrive until after the day on which the ballots were counted. Arapahoe was declared county seat, touching off a series of court orders and bitter political fights between the the north and south parts of the county.

In second election held the following October, Beaver City was declared the victor but Arapahoe continued to claim victory based on the April election. It took three years of legal challenges before the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in favor of Beaver City. Continued dissension delayed the building of a courthouse until 1888.

The first courthouse was used until 1948. Construction began on the current courthouse three story brick courthouse, designed by John Latenser, in 1949 and it was dedicated on May 4, 1951.
