The Sprague Memorial Tower is a prominent stone structure set in Elm Park of the Wellesley Hills section of Wellesley. Though somewhat hidden by trees, the beautiful tower stands along Route 16, surrounded by a flower garden.
According to the sign, mounted on the structure and a web site on wickedlocal.com, John W. Shaw donated a clock and bell to the town of Needham (at the time, the west parish of Needham) for the village of Grantville in 1874. The clock and bell were previously installed in an elementary school (named after Shaw), but it was demolished in 1924. In 1928, town benefactor, Isaac Sprague, commissioned a tower to be built to house the bell and clock.
The tower, designed by Benjamin, Proctor, Jr., is built of variously colored stone, which is similar to many buildings in the village, including the public library and post office.
