The City of Fort Myers Wastewater Treatment Division consists of two regional Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facilities. The Central AWWT Facility is located at 1501 Raleigh Street and is designed to treat 11 Million gallons of wastewater per day. The South AWWT Facility, located at 1618 South Drive, is designed to treat 12 million gallons per day. The existing Bardenpho treatment systems were put on line in 1985, replacing the old “Sewer Plants” at both facilities. These “Wastewater Treatment Plants” treat wastewater from all of The City of Fort Myers and much of Lee County. The division also maintains a state certified wastewater laboratory, a state and federally approved Industrial Pretreatment Program, and is responsible for the proper stabilization and land application of the wastewater biosolids (formerly known as sludge) generated at the facilities.

The majority of the treated effluent from the two plants is discharged to the Caloosahatchee River. A portion of the Central Plant effluent is diverted and treated to reclaimed water standards for reuse in the community. The city recently expanded this process and will also provide reclaimed water capability at the South Plant over the next several years. A project has recently been completed to upgrade the disinfection process at both facilities to reflect today’s technological advances in this area of treatment.

What is the capacity of the facility?: 11 million gallons peak flow

Describe the biological treatment technology used.:
Mixed liquor is a mixture of raw sewage (after grit and screenings removal) and healthy "activated sludge". This mixture is the heart of the biological wastewater treatment process. When properly conditioned through the control of oxygen and solids content, the organisms in mixed liquor will eat, absorb or convert pollutants to an environmentally acceptable form.

How are biosolids (sludge) managed?: The biosolids are stabilized in aerobic (with air) digesters, dewatered (thickened) on belt filter presses and utilized as fertilizer on pasture land, hay or sod fields and in citrus groves.

What technology is used for disinfection prior to dicharge of treated water?: The remaining clear water is then disinfected and flows to the Caloosahatchee River.

Who is the owner/operator fo the facility?: City of Fort Myers

How is the facility governed?: City Council

What is the website of the WWTP?: [Web Link]

Visit Instructions:
Please post at least 2 original photographs of the site. We would much rather see photos of the plant itself as opposed to the front office, but we also understand that security and site layout may limit your opportunities.
