The Elyria City Hall was built in 1867. During extensive renovations in 1878 the second floor was converted to an elaborate opera house. The opera house closed in 1905 and the space was converted to city offices. The building was converted to a jail in the 1930. During extensive renovations and expansion in the late 1980s the building was incorporated in the municipal complex and again serves as City Hall.
