The development of Thomas County is tied to the westward advance of the railroad across the Nebraska sandhills. The county was organized in 1886 and Thedford was designated the county seat in 1887, the year the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line reached the settlement. Thomas County, population 729 is one of eleven Nebraska counties with fewer than a thousand residents.

A 1922 courthouse served the county until 2005. It was razed and the present one story modern courthouse was built on the site in 2006.
