Now listed by the US Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark, Sloss Furnace was a pig-iron producung blast furnace from 1882 to 1971. As with other blast furnaces, the danger of working with molten iron resulted in injury and, quite often, death. One of those men who lived the dangerous life of a foundryman was Theophilus Jowers.
In 1887, while serving as assistant foundryman at the Alice Furnace in Birmingham, Jowers slipped and fell into the molten iron with deadly consequences. Very little of his body was found as expected.
Not long after that happened that people reported seeing his ghost walking around, doing his job and checking to make sure that things were being done correctly. Jowers' ghost haunted the Alice No. One furnace for more than twenty years. It wasn't long after the Alice furnace was abandoned that his ghost began to be seen at the Sloss furnaces. Even Jowers son has witnessed one of his father's ghostly appearances during the "graveyard shift" at Sloss.
Numerous ghostly sightings througout the years along with recent paranormal investigations have kept the ghost stories alive throughout the years, fostering Sloss Furnace as one of the most haunted places in America.
