Von diesem Kopfbahnhof verlassen viel Züge Hamburg und viel kommen an.

Er ist ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt für den Fern-, Regional- und S-Bahn-Verkehr.

Auch der DB-Autozug fährt von hier aus ab. Viele Biker und Urlauber aus Skandinavien benutzen diesen Bahnhof um ihr Auto auf der Bahn zu verladen und so entspannt mit der Bahn gen Süden (z.B. Verona oder Bozen) zu fahren.

Der Bahnhof wurde 2005 umgebaut und wurde ein großes Parkhaus errichtet.
