At the foot Hardknott Pass, at the entrance to Brotherilkeld farm is a very photogenic 'phone kiosk, which used to work. It is now in a very sorry state. Nearest pay-phones are at Eskdale Youth Hostel and Woolpack Inn.

The 'phone kiosk has appeared on many commercial photos from chocolates to Christmas cards.
When it worked the number was 01946 723211. There is a handset but without coin box and dial tone, so it would not accept coins.
And would have been useful to distressed motorists after burning out their brakes and clutch over the passes, or after vandals had broken in to their parked car, whilst they walked on surrounding fells (hills).
