Fort Clark was an army fort established in 1852 at the Las Moras Springs and Creek to protect the military roads from mauraders. The fort continued until decommissioning in 1946. It was bought by private interests and many of the old buildings have been preserved and others restored. The military history is kept very much alive and this statue of a riderless horse honors the soldiers fallen in battle.
The "Empty Saddle" horse is molded fiberglass. The saddle, bridle and saddlebags are leather, which have been preserved by fiber glassing and the stirrups and reins are metal for durability. The statue sits on a fieldstone base, which is partially surrounded by guidon flags representing the various cavalry units that served at Fort Clark. The iron fence posts alongside the statue are well over 100 years old and were from the King William District in San Antonio.
