On July 10, 1913, one could fry eggs in the desert sand near Baker, California. With 134 degrees Fahrenheit it was the HOTTEST day ever recorded in North American history – actually, at this time it also was the world record. The world record, however, was lost nine years later to the oasis Al 'Aziziyah in Libya (which recorded 136 degrees in 1922), but the North American record still remains until this day.
In 1991, Will Herron, a local business man, hired Electric Sign Co. of Las Vegas (manufacturers of many neon and bulb monstrosities of the Vegas strip) to build a monument, worth of the memory of North America's hottest day ever. What came out was a 134 feet tall thermometer - one foot for each degree. It soon became known as the World's Tallest Thermometer and now, 17 years later, all guide books refer to it and you can't buy a postcard in Baker without its picture on it.
