A 5,400-acre preserve sheltering one of the best examples of ridgetop dwarf pine barrens in the world.

This visit introduced my sons to Sam's Point; they thus became the fourth generation of my family to connect with this place.

It is especially significant to me because my grandfather was the foreman of the Civilian Conservation Corps crew which built the fire roads on the ridgetop as mentioned in the Wikipedia article. From childhood into my teens, I would come here with my parents for a day each summer (we lived only an hour away); they would pick wild blueberries while my friends and I explored the Ice Caves.

It's $7 to park at the conservation center, but only when it is open. You can still go up to the ridge (not pay for parking) when the center is closed (Thursday and I think Tuesday).
