Although a major portion of the Lake Renwick Nature Preserve is closed to the public during the nesting season (March through Mid-August), the Copley Nature Park off of US Route 30 is open all year round for your bird watching pleasure

The park offers a short, handicap-accessible path, and a wildlife viewing area, with a viewing scope, protected from the weather by a gazebo. Copley Nature Park is open from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. from March to October and 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. from November through February.

The highlighted birds to watch during nesting are the double-crested cormorants, great egrets, cattle egrets, black-crowned night herons, and great blue herons.

Unfortunately, Lake Renwick received unwanted press coverage because a young alligator (which are illegal to own) was released into Lake Renwick in the Summer of 2008. The adult birds harassed the alligator enough for it to seek easier prey – in the form of bait in an alligator trap. Although this alligator was caught, please report any suspicious activity to the Will County Sheriff's non-emergency phone number (815) 727-6191.
