In changing from the monumental style of the earlier Carnegie libraries, this was the first of eight branch libraries in the city of pittsburgh. The architecture molded closer to the existing brick residential buildings, and the interior design followed a then-revolutionary concept of open-stacks, allowing the library to be staffed by a single person. The stacks were positioned in radial pattern, allowing the librarian at the center to view all stacks. Another revolutionary concept was to have reading rooms, with walls being of glass panes and windows above waist level, allowing easy monitoring from the librarian. The rear was a semi-circular projection, to follow the stack design. No air conditioning (A/C) is present, and occasionally the library is closed in mid-day in very hot summer days.

On Oct 6 2009, it was reported in the local newspaper that this branch has been selected for possible closure ( (visit link) )
