From 1640 to the early 1800s, it was Hartford's only graveyard. Over 6000 people were buried here. Over time, to make room for a growing city, the cemetery's size was reduced to four acres. Today there are 415 headstones.

The cemetery sits adjacent to the Center Church, built in 1807.
