In 1939 author Louis Bromfield moved back to north central Ohio after a long stay in France. Upon his arrival he purchased a small farm and the surrounding land. Here he built Malabar Farm. Malabar Farm served as a way for Bromfield to develop and teach new methods of sustainable farming. The farm and Pleasant Valley area also was a constant source of inspiration for Bromfield's writing.
In addition to hosting farmers to educate them, he would also invite people to his home for social events. The most famous of which was the marriage of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in 1945.
The farm is now owned by the Ohio State Parks. They still use it as a working farm, and holding true to Bromfield's legacy still practice conservation, and sustainable farming. The farm is open to the public to walk around. They also hold many events here as well. It is free to visit the farm, unless participating in a special event. One can also tour the "Big House" for a fee of $4.00
