This hut is sited in the Nelson Lakes National Park area and entails a tramp/hike from the south end of Lake Rotoiti either from Lakehead Hut or Coldwater Hut (both of these are accessible via water taxi or a short tramp/hike).
The tramp from Lakehead Hut to John Tait Hut takes about 5 hours.

The hut has 27 bunks with mattresses and has a small wood stove for heating - as a serviced hut wood is supplied and collection from the bush should be uneccessary and is discouraged due to the environmental changes/damage that it causes. You need to pack your own gas/fuel cooker for cooking food.

Walk and hut information can be acquired from the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre in St Arnaud. If you go to this hut then do your part in leaving it in a neat and tidy condition.

Other huts linked to by the nearby tracks are Cupola Hut, Upper Travers Hut and Hopeless Hut. The Hut is also on the route of the popular Travers-Sabine Circuit.
