The MOSES CLEAVELAND STATUE, SW. quadrangle of Public Square, represents the general, with surveyor's instruments in his hands, looking down on the busy square. The bronze figure was executed by G.C.Hamilton, Cleveland, and erected in 1887 as a tribute to the city's founder.
Northeast Ohio was once owned by the state of Connecticut and was named New Connecticut, then later the Western Reserve. Cleaveland worked for the Connecticut Land Company and was sent to survey the land and lay out towns. He landed at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River at Lake Erie and the employees of the Land Company named the settlement Cleaveland in his honor.
The statue of Cleaveland still stands in the southwest quadrant of Public Square.
