Mountain biking is permitted in Kaimanawa Forest Park only on formed roads and on the Tree Trunk Gorge track.
Tree Trunk Gorge Track begins across the bridge over the upper Tongariro River at Trunk Gorge, reached from a side road off the Desert Road 23kms south of Turangi. Some bikers prefer to park their vehicles at the Desert Road turnoff and include the 5km downhill tarseal road as part of their bike ride. The track comprises of some sealed road some gravel road and good single track through mountain beech forest on leaf covered trails. Old lava crags and pristine native bush are the outstanding features on this ride. You will need to be aware that the track is also shared with hikers.
The first track bridge has washed out but the stream can be easily crossed on foot or ridden across. Follow the track right through to the Pillars of Hercules where a new Swingbridge crosses the Tongariro River and a track leads back up to the Desert Road. Unless you have arranged transport to pick you up here, you will need to ride back along the main highway to your car parking at the Tree Trunk Gorge Road turnoff.
