This 1899 Austrian 105 mm caliber Field Howitzer (one of six) was presented to an Austrian Prince and his English Princess bride in honor of their arranged marriage in 1900. The six cannons guarded the Prince's Austrian castle until captured by the German army during the First World War.
The gun was re-captured by the Allies and is the only one to survive the war. It was presented to the City of Sault Ste. Marie and stood at the Court House cenotaph until 1990.
The cannon was moved in 2000 from storage at the Armory and taken to Sault College where it was refurbished / rebuilt to its original state by Poul Martinsen's Ironworker classes over the next three years. The wheels had to be re-manufactured by Russ Radford. It was then painted by Alfano's Auto Body and moved to the Legion by Town and Country Towing. The cement pads were constructed by LaFarge Construction, Ro-Von Steel Ltd, Palmer Construction Group Inc., Brandes Aggregates Limited.
