The rocks of the gorge are mostly Limestone with iron rich sandstone on top. The gorge was formed in the ice age when any water in the limestone froze. It was the glacial melt water that eroded the ice-hardened rock away to form the gorge. Once the limestone thawed any water on the surface seeped into the rock instead of eroding it away. The deepest portion of the gorge 113 m/371 ft.
Tours are offered in the two caves; Gough's Cave and Cox's Cave. Other activities include hiking up and down the trails around the gorge and rock climbing.
The south side of the gorge is owned by the Marquess of Bath's Longleat Estate. The cliffs on the north side of the gorge are within The National Trust.
