Opened in 1928 and closed in 1971, Pier 21 was the arrival point of more than 1 million immigrants. This building typifies the self-contained immigration centres setup in several major ports.
Pier 21 also was the embarkation point for many Canadian soldiers during the Second World War. It now contains a museum on the 2nd floor with a special room dedicated to the story of the armed forces leaving for the war. The remainder of the museum has displays and artifacts telling the stories of the immigrants arriving for a new life in Canada.
