Illinois Central No.8701 GP-11 diesel is on display next to the old depot (now used by the Chamber of Commerce) in Carbondale, IL, which is next door to the current Amtrak station.
This locomotive was originally a GP-9 and was rebuilt (new electrics, new diesel engine, etc.) in 1979 in the I.C. Paducah, KY shops and was then designated as a GP-11. The diesel engine was an EMD type 567C giving about 1,850 Hp.
Visitors can walk on the walk ways of the locomotive but there is no access to inside the cab.
