From the City of Laurel Walking Tour plaque:
First a Jesuit Mission from Georgetown University, the original St. Mary's Chapel was built by Dr. Theodore Jenkins in 1843. St. Mary's is the oldest church in continuous use in Laurel. It was established in 1890, and the parish school was established in 1893 in a frame addtion to the original chapel. The current St. Mary's School was built in 1953 to the north of the church. Architect John Walton designed the large 1959 church addition, and a new rectory was built in 1965 connecting to the church.
