This historic bridge, also known as Bridge No. 5718, carries MN-123 over the Kettle River in Sandstone, MN. It is an excellent and well-preserved example of a pratt deck truss bridge. Last inspected in 2007, it was given a Bridge Sufficiency Rating of 78.6.
The bridge itself is a three-span riveted steel continuous deck truss built in 1948, with a total length of 400 feet. The main span is 200 feet, and cantilevers 50-feet into each of the end spans. The roadway width is 32-feet, two lanes, with a sidewalk along the south side of the bridge. In 1984, the deck drains were eliminated and the concrete bridge deck was completely replaced.
It is very difficult to photograph this bridge from the ends, but I tried my best to show the intricate ironwork as best I could. Maybe one day a visitor will waymark it from the river!
