This monument is located in downtown Peterborough, NH in front of the American Legion hall. It was designed by M. Milmore of Boston in 1869 and made in Chicopee, MA at the Ames Foundry.
It was originally located in Putnam Park, and dedicated in June of 1870. In 1902, the monument was moved to the steps of the Old Peterborough Academy, then occupied by the local GAR post, now home of the American Legion.
It contains a list of the "Peterborough Soldiers Sacrificed" during The War of the Rebellion. This list includes Sophia, the wife of LT Col. Charles Scott, who drowned after the sinking of her steamer on the Potomic River.
