This is a four-wheel saddle tank locomotive. I couldn't find any information about where it came from in the immediate vicinity. Locomotives like these are usually used for yard duty or short runs. Water for the boiler was stored in the saddle tank located on top of the boiler. Coal was usually carried in a bunker behind the cab. Either it was removed from this locomotive or it had a tender.
The locomotive was placed here by the firms that participated in the rehabilitation program. One of the plaques states -
Dedicated to the Alaska Railroad Rehabilitation Program that gave Alaska a modern rail carrier capable of providing common defense and the encouragement of the economic development of the territory of Alaska.
Commenced in 1947 and completed in 1952 under the administration of Harry S. Truman, President of the United States; Oscar L. Chapman, Secretary of the Interior; James P. Davis, Director Office of Territories, Department of Interior; Ernest Gruening, Governor of Alaska; John P. Johnson, General Manager, The Alaska Railroad. Dedicated November 17, 1952.
End of narrative.
