William Bligh is famous for the mutiny against his command on board HM Armed Vessel Bounty in 1789, which was the subject of a novel (by Charles Nordhoff and James Hall in 1932) and several films in which the part of Bligh has been played by Charles Laughton(1935), Trevor Howard(1962) and Anthony Hopkins(1984) [1]
The extent to which the sadistic disciplinarian as portrayed in the novel and films resembled the real Bligh is the subject of much debate [1,3].
He was buried at St Mary-at-Lambeth church, a short distance North of the site of the plaque, which now houses the Museum of Garden History [2]
The plaque reads:
William Bligh 1754-1817 Commander of the "Bounty" lived here
