Lyman Frank Baum, one of the foremost writers for the young in the English-speaking world, who was born in Chittenango in 1856, achieved acclaim, long after he had left the state, for Father Goose: His Book and the Wizard of Oz Series. (New York: A guide to the Empire State- 1940) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- L. Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, on May 15, 1856 to Benjamin Ward and Cynthia Ann (Stanton) Baum. He was the seventh of nine children, and named after his uncle, Lyman Spaulding. At the age of five , his father closed the familys' Barrel Factory and moved the entire family to Syracuse, New York. By his early adult years, he had tried his hand at many short lived careers, however, he always came back to writing books and short stories. In his early forties, Baum decided to earn his living as a writer. Together with artist William Wallace Denslow, he produced "Father Goose: His Book" in 1899. In doing so, created a publishing sensation which sold almost 60,000 copies. However, Father Goose was soon forgotten, with the release of Baum and Denslow's next work. Written in 1899 and published in 1900, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was a huge success with the public and critics alike.
