Ivan Mazuranic (1814-1890) is regarded as the most important figure in Croatia's political and cultural life in the mid-19th century. He made "triple accomplishment" by making contributions in economics, linguistics, and poetry. He was the first Croatian ban that was born a commoner. He has an important role in Croatian transition from a semifeudal system to a modern civil society of the 19th century. Mazuranic also has very important role in modernization and secularization of Croatian society of that time. He modernized Croatia's educational system by forming public schools network and reducing the importance of denominational schools.
