The construction of Skyline Drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains began in 1931. The first section completed was 34 miles from Swift Run Gap (MP 65.5) to Thornton Gap (MP 31.5) which is considered the central division of Shenandoah National Park today.

When the Park was dedicated in 1935, the Civilian Conservation Corps were responsible for much of the grading of slopes and construction of the overlooks and rock walls along Skyline Dr.

Jewel Hollow Overlook is divided into two parts. The pictures depict the parking area at the south end. Access to the Appalachian Trail is found at either end.
