Florida City was originally named Detroit by settlers from that northern city attracted to this "Garden of Eden" by promotional brochures. These northern settlers became dissatisfied with their purchases and moved back north. The remaining southern families in 1914 incorporated the city and named it Florida City.
Florida City is the southernmost city in the United States which is not on an island. It is also the last stop on the mainland north of the Florida Keys.
