Like all visitors to Siem Reap, my main destination in Siem Reap was the ancient ruins. But on leaving the airport, if you keep a sharp eye out, you'll see a large billboard advertising the War Museum. But don't go expecting a large building with cool air conditioned rooms, glass cases, and smooth talking docents. After paying your $3 US you'll find yourself in a field with a rusting hulk of a Huey adjacent to an equally sad fighter jet. Neither one has signage to explain their role in war in Cambodia. What you'll find is a caretaker who is equally a part of the museum himself. Like the country of Cambodia, this museum reminds the visitor that Pol Pot's ravages were not that long ago. Yes, the display of arms is impressive, but the first hand accounts from the local survivors make this stop a must do for all visitors heading to Angkor Wat.
