Set directly across from the Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque is just as striking with intricate stained glass, beautiful caligraphy, and the blue painted tiles which give it it's name. Constructed between 1609 and 1616 under the direction of Sultan Ahmed I, it is known for it's six minarets and classical Islamic architecture with Byzantine influences. Unlike the Aya Sofia, the Blue Mosque is still active and it is also free and open to the public. The call to prayer from the Mosque's outside speakers can be heard throughout the Western Shore of the city.
