Note the "wooden" letters which spell "ALLEN". This is a style that appears from place to place. It seems to match that Victorian headstone trend which was to make headstones look like tree stumps.
Also, there's a chance that the three chain links represent membership in the International Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.).
