The well of pure water consecrated by St. Colmcille in 560 A.D. marks the origin of Swords as it gives the town its name - "Sord" meaning "pure".

Since pagan times, wells have been serving not only practical purposes but have also been objects of sacred worship.
The water in Swords well is so clear that it is almost invisible and it is renowned for its curative properties for sore eyes. The refurbishment in 1991 by Swords Historical Society ensures that the well is a lasting memorial to the Patron of Swords.
