There were several theatres similar to the Royal built across Canada from 1913 to 1930 that showcased vaudeville, live theatre and music. Very few exist today and even fewer that are in as good as shape as the Royal.
Over it's almost 100 year life, performers such as Sarah Bernhardt, Carlos Montoya, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Luciano Pavarotti, have graced the stage of the Royal. Although there has been some modifications to the building, the auditorium retains its original Rococo/Renaissance Revival style decor.
The Royal is still a well used venue and is home to the Victoria Symphony and Pacific Opera.
It was designated a National Historic Site in 1987 and Plaqued in 1990
