Despite its name, Dickinson Spring is not really a spring - in actuality, it's a flowing artesian well.
In 1916 Thomas Dixon dug a well here, but it went dry during the drought of 1934. In 1938, a road crew nicked a pipe from the well while building the nearby highway. The well starting flowing again, and it's been flowing ever since.
The location was named after the local ghost town of Dickinson, which used to be a stop on the Soo Line railroad just east of this spot, and boasted a population of 50 people in 1915.
Most days, this location draws a steady line of patrons with water jugs in hand, and local residents talk of the water's clarity and taste. Because of its popularity, the Minnesota Health Department monitors Dickinson Spring for a wide variety of contaminants on a regular basis, and has declared it safe for public drinking.
