William Henry Morningstar built St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in 1822. The original structure was 50 ft. x 32 ft rectangle and was consecrated by Bishop Bowen in early 1823. The bell tower was added later and contained a bell from the ship, Seabrook, which sailed many years ago from Charleston to Edisto Island. The original bell was given to the cause of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Church features a winding stairway, which leads to the balcony where slaves once worshiped. In 1833 the vestry room was added and the present organ was purchased in 1848. Mrs. John C. Calhoun raised much of the funds for the organ. In 1854 a rectory was acquired at a cost of $1,100, and in 1860 the churchyard was enlarged by an additional 1.5 acres. The parish house was completed in 1955. In the churchyard cemetery lie may of South Carolina’s most famous citizens, including Mrs. John C. Calhoun who was the wife of the Vice President and a lifelong member of the congregation. Thomas Green Clemson, founder of Clemson University and his wife Anna Maria Calhoun Clemson also are buried in the church cemetery. And finally Confederate General Barnard Bee, who gave the name “Stonewall” to General Thomas Jonathan Jackson is buried in the family plot. Holy Communion is held on the First Sunday of the month at 5 p.m., and evening prayers are held on the third Sunday at 5 p.m. Source/Credit: ( visit link)
