In 1908, while caught in a blinding snowstorm, Dr. John Espy spotted something glowing on the hillside just outside of Trinidad, CO. Following the light, he discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary set amidst the trees. The development of the shrine began sometime soon after that and was finally completed in 1961. In 1962, someone knocked over the statue and broke off an arm. Inside the statue body was a note indicating it was made in France--not directly from God.

Another version of the story has that the original statue sheltered Dr. Espy, saving his life in that blizzard. The next day, it had disappeared and the shrine was built in the spot to commemorate the event.

In either event, the chapel is fully-functional and open for visiting daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. It is also available for events by calling by calling (719) 846-7347.
