General Dynamics F-16B "Fighting Falcon"
The F-16 "Fighting Falcon" marked a bold technological leap, with advance
concepts, exemplified by the electronic "fly-by wire" control system rather than
conventional cables and linkages. During Desert Shield/Storm and Operation
Desert Fox, the F-16 provided close air support and air defense suppression
roles. In Operation Desert Storm the F-16 flew 13,500 sorties with 250
aircraft, provided more than 40 percent of USAF bomb dropping sorties and
delivered 20,000 tons of bombs. It operated from austere,
forward-operating locations to maximize sortie rates and payloads, and performed
a variety of missions, including Scud Chasing and Killer Scout Fast Forward Air
Controller. The USAF selected the General Dynamics F-16 in April 1972 to
meet its requirement for a new small, lightweight low-cost air superiority
Fighter. First flight of the F-16A was February 1974. The F-16
lightweight, fast and potent., it remains one of the best Fighters in its class.
Its weapons systems include a 20mm multi-barrel cannon and night hard points for
carrying a variety of bombs, electronic countermeasures and advanced types of
weapons, weighting up to 15,000 pounds.
