This sundial began with Henry Cakora's quest for an education in celestial navigation. To learn the fundamentals he would observe the celestial bodies and construct his own tools to measure their movement. Each step in the development of his information forced him to refine his tools or his assumptions. The sundial was a result of some of the insight he received during his struggles with solar mechanics. When the idea of the sundial became firm he wanted to build it in a place where others could see and enjoy it. The board of directors for the Pekin Park District offered a large place in the Mineral Springs Park Sunken Garden. Henry wrote many pages of computer code to accurately locate thousands of aluminum castings all produced in his shop. It was carefully designed to fit into the space allocated. Mr. Cakora donated his time and materials to this project with assistance from local contractors and individual volunteers.
