There aren’t many Romaneque homes in the valley. This fortress-like home, built for Josephine Blaevecke Brown, the widow of a Cameron County Sheriff, is an exception.

S.W. Brooks designed this house in 1894 using materials shipped from New Orleans. The house’s massive proportions were designed to protect the residents from the brutal South Texas summers. The exterior of the building is formed by two layers of brick, 13½” thick. The house is orientated to take advantage of the prevailing southeast Gulf breeze.
