The
San Antonio National Cemetery was started in 1867 when the property which was
part of the San Antonio burial ground was donated to the United States
government. The initial burials were for Union soldiers who had previously been
buried in the city cemetery and other sites. Later others from the western
frontier were interred including many unknowns. The cemetery has approximately
3,200 graves. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic
Places in 1999.
