Along Mesa Top Ruins Road, there are just so many spots to stop and see the thousands of dwellings spread throughout these canyons and mesas. The Balcony House requires a guided tour...and if you're clautrophobic, afraid of heights or ladders, you may have difficulty. The tour started at the top of the mesa above the Balcony House and requires crawling through a short tunnel and a 32 foot ladder.
The ancestral Puebloan people inhabited this dwelling later than most, and it seems as though, to protect their water source, the tunnel was created to "bump off" any intruders, and the inhabitants literally climbed the rock cliffs with their fingertips.
