Marker text is as follows:

Founded 1730 by Edward Shippen. Second oldest town in the state west of the Susquehanna River. Important community on colonial frontier. Temporary seat of Cumberland Co., whose first courts were held here in 1750-51.

An interesting note - this town is located in 2 counties - with about 2/3 in Cumberland & 1/3 in Franklin. This was apparantly done for political reasons, based on the political affiliation of the residents.
