The Sheksna River is the southernmost and only south flowing component of the Volga Baltic waterway, the complicated system of rivers, lakes and canals connecting the Volga with St. Petersburg. It arises at about 60 04.020N, 38 00.150E and is the only river flowing out of the White Lake (Lake Beloye. It enters the Rybinsk Reservoir near the city of Cherepovets at about 59 06.750N, 37 51.900E.

A dam near the city of Sheksna forms the Upper and Lower Sheksna Reservoirs. Its double lock, the only one on the river raises/lowers vessels approximately 42 feet. The northern part of the river was once notoriously difficult to navigate because of long stretches of rapids but the Sheksna dam raised the water levels of the White Lake and the river by 5 to 6 feet, drowning the rapids and opening the river to large ships.

Various sources give the length of the river as 86-115 miles (139-186 KM). All agree that it was originally about twice as long, meandering across the basin now filled by the Rybinsk Reservoir to join the Volga near the present day city of Rybinsk.

Above the cities of Cherepovets and Sheksna the river flows through partially wooded rural areas. Small villages with colorful wooden houses line the banks in its narrower sections. Tourist cruises usually do a shore excursion at the village of Goritsy. The coordinates above were taken from a cruise ship between the Upper SheksnaReservoir and Goritsy.
